Mosques in Kuwait have amended a line in the azan – the daily Muslim prayer call broadcast five times a day – and reminded people not to join congregational prayers.

The move comes after authorities last Friday suspended the five daily prayers at mosques as well as the weekly Friday prayers, following fears over the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

A line in the azan, “hayya ala salah”, urging Muslims to “come to prayer”, is now amended to “pray in your homes”.

Kuwait, which has so far reported more than 100 Covid-19 cases, has implemented drastic measures to fight the virus, as it claimed more lives with the global death toll passing 5,000.

The tiny Gulf state announced a public holiday from March 12-26, with only vital services being allowed to open. It also imposed restrictions on commercial flights to and from Kuwait City, with only Kuwaiti nationals and their immediate relatives allowed entry.
