Kuwait has approved a draft law authorising KD500 million ($1.6 billion) additional funding to ministries and state agencies to fight the impact of the coronavirus.

The move was agreed during a weekly cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Kuwait News Agency reported.

The cabinet also agreed to another bill aiming to punish preventative health violations with jail sentences of up to three months and fines of up to KD5,000.

Under the new bill, anyone infected with Covid-19 who deliberately transmits the disease to others will be jailed for up to five years, with fines ranging up to KD50,000.

The fresh measures are part of ongoing efforts to curtail the spread of the new coronavirus in Kuwait which has so far reported a total of 130 infections.

Separately, Kuwait said it has donated $40 million to the World Health Organisation (WHO) to help the global effort to stop the spread of Covid-19.

On March 11 WHO declared the coronavirus a “global pandemic“.
