A section of the Jaber Al-Ahmad Stadium in Kuwait has been transformed into a huge medical facility designed to cater for the increasing number of coronavirus cases in the country.

The complex, which was built in three weeks, includes a field medical centre, dormitories for medics and nurses, 5,000 beds, intensive care units and pharmacies.

The first section, which has 1,250 beds, has been handed over to the Ministry of Health. The whole centre will be fully operational by the end of May.

Minister of Health Sheikh Dr Basel Al-Sabah, who attended the handover event, praised Kuwait Red Crescent Society for its contribution to building the facility and lauded “frontline” volunteers who are leading the fight against the deadly virus.

Another 250-bed fully equipped medical facility will be opened at the Fairground in Mishref area, the health minister added.

The total number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the country currently stands at 4700, while the number of fatalities is 40.
