Municipal Council Chairman Muhalhel Al-Khaled has denied reports the municipal council in Kuwait has been dissolved.

The rumours surfaced after five members of the council applied for candidacy in the upcoming parliamentary elections, reported Kuwait Times.

However, Al-Khaled said the council will complete its tenure as long as the minimum number of required members is upheld.

He added if the running members win parliamentary seats, new members would be elected to replace them if the remaining period of the council’s tenure exceeds six months.

Elections for the next parliament will be held on November 26

Kuwait’s Emir ordered the dissolution of the parliament after it came under fire from lawmakers and the public for raising fuel prices. The Emir reportedly said “security challenges” in the region could best be addressed by consulting the electorate.

Kuwait adopted a parliamentary democratic system in 1962.
