The 6th World Congress of the World Federation of Associations of Paediatric Surgeons (WOFAPS 2019) started Friday at the Qatar National Convention Centre with the attendance of over 800 surgeons from more than 80 countries.

The international congress, hosted by Sidra Medicine, and being held for the first time in the Middle East, will conclude on November 4.

The conference aims to improve the surgical care of children around the globe, driving collaboration, education and training beyond borders. It also aims to ensure every child in the world has access to good quality healthcare and treatment by a paediatric medical or surgical specialist. Dr Mansour Ali, executive chair of surgery at Sidra Medicine said,
“It gives me great pleasure to welcome over 800 paediatric general surgeons, paediatric urologists, community surgeons, surgical trainees, and nurses from around the globe to WOFAPS 2019.”
“ Qatar is the first Middle East country to host such a major paediatric surgery congress. As a Qatari surgeon, I am proud to see the readiness and capability of a leading healthcare organisation like Sidra Medicine to host such a global event. We are now at the forefront of women’s and children’s healthcare services and supporting the teaching and training to attending surgeons from around the globe,” Dr Ali explained.
“The organisation of this conference has truly been a team effort, with the main goal to provide all delegates with the best, and enriching world congress experience. Under the theme ‘Moving Collaboration, Education and Training Beyond Borders’, Qatar is welcoming the brightest and most innovative thought leaders in the surgical and medical field,” Prof David Sigalet, chief of patient services at Sidra Medicine and president of WOFAPS said,
Dr Sanjeev Dutta, former associate professor of paediatric surgery, Stanford, and head of innovations at Johnson and Johnson, said,
“Africa and Asia are the geographies that witness the biggest disparities in healthcare, and it’s a global responsibility to address those disparities in terms of offering access to well-being to people everywhere. Organising the congress here in Qatar and having 100 doctors who are giving care to children in these parts of the world sponsored to come and attend is a sign of the democratisation of surgery, and giving equal chances in surgical access to everyone.”
The congress hosted a series of dedicated presentations and sessions on different topics including; ‘International Paediatric Surgical Oncology’, organised by Prof Jorg from IPSO, and the Hugh Greenwood ‘Paediatric Surgical Skills Course’, organised by Prof Kokila Lakhoo and Haitham Dagash from BAPS and GICS.
In parallel with the 6th World Congress of Pediatric Surgery (WOFAPS), full day urology sessions are held every day of the congress, organised by local expert, Dr Pippi Salle, chief of urology at Sidra Medicine.
These dedicated surgery sessions will provide three days of discussions around the most relevant topics and the hottest debates.
The plenary sessions at WOFAPS 2019 cover cross-cutting themes in innovation, education, quality, and safety, and a total of 6 pre- and post congress workshops have been developed to create a diverse platform for more hands-on learning.
